Direct Support Professional Training: The Council supports efforts to recruit and retain a qualified, accessible, available workforce of direct support staff. To assist with this, the Council provides funding for projects and programs. In 2003, the Council contracted with the Center on Disabilities and Human Development to survey direct support staff statewide and produce a report of their findings. Click here for the report.

The Council also supports opportunities for training for direct support staff including the annual training conference sponsored by Community Partnerships of Idaho.
For the latest information on this conference click here to get to the CPI website.

The Council is supporting a pilot project, sponsored by the Department of Health and Welfare, to introduce online training for direct care staff and others using the College of Direct Support. For information about this pilot project, click here.

Disability Mentoring Day: Disability Mentoring Day is an annual effort of the American Association of People with Disabilities. The purpose of DMD is to help elevate the nation's awareness of the talents and capabilities of people with disabilities to strengthen the nation's workforce. Through this project, local communities organize activities that bring students and other young adults together with employers for informational sessions about career opportunities and one-on-one mentoring with volunteers at public and private places of employment. Each year, the Council provides funding for local communities to implement Disability Mentoring Day activities. The 2007 application process is closed, but check back next fall for the 2008 application.

Disability Mentoring Day was October 17, 2007. For more information, go to http://www.dmd-aapd.org/.

Determined to VOTE!: This is a multi-year training and education initiative of the Council in partnership with Comprehensive Advocacy, Inc., the ADA Task Force, the Idaho Assistive Technology Project, and the League of Women Voters, with support from the Idaho Help America Vote Act (HAVA) Committee of the Idaho Secretary of State's office, www.idahovotes.gov. The intent of Project VOTE! is to increase participation by Idahoans with disabilities and elders in the election process and to increase the awareness among election officials and poll workers about barriers that people face when exercising their right to vote. Youth Leadership Forum is a leadership, citizenship and career development program for high school juniors and seniors with disabilities. Selected youth serve as delegates from their communities at a statewide or regional conference. Student delegates gain information about resources related to assistive technology, community support, career development and civil rights. They develop personal leadership plans and commit to follow through on goals. This is also an opportunity for successful adults with disabilities to serve as role models and assist youth to realize their abilities, rights, and responsibilities to pursue meaningful employment and contribute to society.
